The 7th Cooperative Principle is Concern for Community. One of the ways that we demonstrate our commitment to Orcas Island is by investing in causes that are in alignment with our mission and values. We are continuously exploring new ways to give value back to our community and we welcome feedback and ideas from our members as we continue to grow. Below you will find information about our current programs:

Sustainable FARM Fund
The Sustainable Food, Agriculture, Relationships and Markets Fund is a grant program that was started in 2015 as a way of giving more direct support to Orcas Island Farmers. Each year the Co-op invites our growers to apply to receive funds to further develop local agriculture. For more information or apply for a FARM Fund grant, please visit the FARM Fund Page.
Co-op Coins for Community
Little contributions can add up! When you bring your own bag to the Co-op you can receive a wooden coin from our cashiers. Use that wooden coin to choose from one of the three community causes. Currently you can donate your coin towards Orcas Community Participatory Agriculture, our FARM Fund or our monthly rotating 3% Thursday recipient. As of August 2017 our Owners and shoppers have saved over 15,800 bags and raised over $800 for community organizations one nickel at a time!
Community Hero Program (formerly 3% Thursday)
The Orcas Food Co-op’s Community Hero Program serves as an umbrella for “3% Thursdays,” “Register Round Up” and “Coins for Community.” Selected organizations will be the recipient of funds gathered through the following:
- 3% Thursday: 3% of the gross receipts on the third Thursday of the month.
- Register Round Up: Shoppers have the opportunity to round up their purchases throughout the entire month.
- Coins for Community: Wooden coins donated when customers bring their own bag.
Organizations are selected for their service to the community in the following areas: local community service organizations, organic food, healthy food for children or seniors, environmentally friendly and sustainable agricultural practices, human rights, environmental preservation and groups with similar missions and values.
